Geographic Profile
Scott County, situated in the Hoosier Falls region of Indiana, covers 192 square miles.
The county is bordered on the south by Clark County, on the west by Washington County, on
the east by Jefferson County and on the north by Jackson and Jennings Counties.
Scott County is centrally located with respect to several large metropolitan areas. It is
within 30 miles to the north of Louisville, 81 miles to the south of Indianapolis, and 131
miles to the west of Cincinnati. Chicago, St. Louis, and Nashville are located within 300
miles of Scott County.
Scottsburg serves as the county seat and is located in the central region of the county.
Austin is located in the northwestern portion of Scott County.
Interstate 65, the interconnecting link between Louisville and Indianapolis, provides easy
access to the county. Many residents commute to Louisville or Columbus, Indiana, for
sources of employment. The county has light industry that manufactures a variety of
products including printing, plastic and rubber components, magnetic extrusions, custom
packaging, and food products.
Topography
Scott County residents enjoy a moderate climate on a year round basis. Rich soil and
abundant land are available for farming. A flood plain in the eastern portion of the
county results in land that is somewhat marshy. The county also is covered with forest and
rolling hills.
